Laoshan Scenic Area
Laoshan rises directly beside the Yellow Sea, combining granite peaks, coastal cliffs, streams, villages and a long Daoist religious landscape. Taiqing, Yangkou, Jufeng and Beijiushui are separate route systems with different entrances and character, not stops on one simple loop. The meeting of mountain geology, maritime weather and living communities gives the area more depth than a single summit view.

Badaguan Historic District
Badaguan is a landscaped residential district of curving roads, mature trees and villas built in varied early twentieth-century styles. Its name and street plan reference historic Chinese passes, while buildings reflect Qingdao's complicated colonial and modern history. The district is best understood as an ensemble of topography, planting and architecture rather than a collection of isolated photo façades.
青岛德国总督楼旧址博物馆
Former German Governor's Residence
Built from 1903 to 1907 for the German colonial governor, the residence combines stonework, asymmetrical massing and elaborate interiors on Signal Hill's slope. Later political occupants added further historical layers. As a museum, the building helps explain how architecture projected colonial authority, while preserved materials and room sequences reveal elite domestic technology of the period.

PLA Navy Museum
The museum presents the development of China's modern navy through documents, equipment, aircraft and large vessels displayed beside Qingdao Bay. Outdoor ships and indoor historical galleries connect technology with national maritime history. Its waterfront position also helps visitors compare military, commercial and civic uses of the same harbour landscape.

Spanish Mackerel Dumplings
鲅鱼水饺
Finely worked Spanish mackerel is mixed with chives and seasoning into a soft, juicy filling wrapped in boiled wheat dumpling skins. The coastal speciality depends on fresh fish and careful deboning.
Fish and gluten allergies apply; eat hot and ask whether any pork fat or other seafood is mixed into the filling.

Small local clams are quickly stir-fried with chilli, garlic and aromatics until they open, producing a briny dish commonly shared with other seafood and staple foods.
Choose a high-turnover seafood venue, discard unopened shells and confirm the price basis before ordering.
Cool, tangy, garlicky and lightly marine
Seaweed Jelly Noodles
海菜凉粉
A clear, firm jelly is made from local marine algae, cut into strips and dressed cold with vinegar, garlic and sesame. It is cooling and distinctly different from starch-based liangfen inland.
Eat freshly chilled and ask about sesame, chilli and shared cold-dish handling if allergies matter.
Crisp, juicy, savoury and briny

Wheat dumplings filled with shrimp, fish or mixed seafood are pan-fried for a crisp base while retaining a juicy interior, adapting a northern dumpling technique to Qingdao's catch.
Ask for the exact seafood filling and let it cool before biting; shellfish, fish and gluten allergens are common.

Germany held Qingdao for sixteen years and left it a cathedral, a governor's mansion, a brewery and a grid of villas on the hills above the harbour. The old town is the reason to come: walk up from the Zhanqiao pier through the granite streets to Signal Hill and look down over the roofs.
East of it the city becomes modern and long, following the coast for thirty kilometres past beaches, the Olympic sailing marina and the May Fourth Square towers. Laoshan, at the far end, is a real mountain dropping straight into the sea.
August brings the beer festival and the crowds. Early summer and autumn are clear and mild; the sea is warm enough from July into September.
Getting there+
**Jiaodong (TAO)** is 40 kilometres north-west; metro line 8 reaches Qingdao North station in about an hour. High-speed trains from Beijing take around three hours, from Shanghai about four and a half, and from Jinan an hour and a half, arriving at **Qingdao** station on the old-town waterfront or **Qingdao North** on the metro.
