Tianmen lies on the Jianghan Plain and was historically known as Jingling. Sites associated with Lu Yu around West Lake, the Hu Family Garden in the old town and the Shijiahe archaeological site offer three distinct experiences: tea culture, historic architecture and prehistoric civilisation. Spend a day exploring the urban area at a relaxed pace, then allow another half-day to a full day for Shijiahe. Try Tianmen’s steamed dishes for a taste of local life.

First visit

Arrive and settle in Tianmen

Start with arrival and where to stay, then choose your sights. Recheck transport and accommodation details before booking.

Check which station you are arriving at+

Check the destination station and accommodation location when buying tickets. Do not confuse Tianmen in Hubei with Tianmenshan in Zhangjiajie, Hunan. Tianmen South Station is not in the city centre; allow separate transfer time into town and for the return journey. Check train and bus services for your actual travel day.

Plan city heritage visits and outlying ruins separately+

First-time visitors can stay in central Jingling to link West Lake, Lu Yu cultural sights and the Hu Family Garden. Set aside a separate half-day for Shijiahe rather than squeezing intercity rail travel and a visit to the archaeological site into the same time slot.
