Kunming is the gateway to Yunnan and a good city in its own right, at two thousand metres with weather that never gets extreme. Give it a day or two around Green Lake before heading west to Dali and Lijiang.

Stone Forest Scenic Area
The Stone Forest is an extensive karst landscape where dissolution and erosion shaped dense limestone pinnacles, corridors, caves and platforms. Major and Naigu scenic areas present different rock colour and visitor density. Geological interpretation should be considered together with Sani Yi stories and cultural traditions, rather than reducing the formations to imagined shapes alone.

Dianchi Lake and Haigeng
Dianchi is the large plateau lake defining Kunming's southern edge, with Haigeng providing accessible promenades and views toward the Western Hills. Wetlands, wintering black-headed gulls and ongoing ecological restoration show that this is a living, heavily managed watershed rather than a static scenic backdrop. Different shore parks offer different access and habitat conditions.

Green Lake and Yunnan Military Academy
Green Lake is a compact urban park where daily exercise, music and winter birdlife express contemporary Kunming. Beside it, the former Yunnan Military Academy interprets an influential early twentieth-century institution and the political transformations surrounding its graduates. Together the park and museum connect ordinary city rhythms with modern history without requiring a distant excursion.

Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles
过桥米线
A very hot, oil-sealed broth arrives with rice noodles and separate plates of thin meat, egg, vegetables and herbs that cook in a prescribed order. It is a composed meal, not simply a pre-mixed noodle soup.
The bowl can scald long after arrival; follow the ingredient order and confirm raw meats and broth base for dietary needs.

Chicken and aromatics cook in a Yunnan earthenware pot whose central chimney channels steam inside, gradually creating a clear concentrated broth without adding much water directly.
Usually shared and slow-cooked; ask which herbs or fungi are included and allow preparation time.
Chewy, rice-fragrant and sauce-led
Grilled Erkuai
烧饵块
A flexible sheet made from pounded cooked rice is grilled until lightly blistered, spread with savoury or sweet sauce and folded around vegetables, egg or optional meat.
Choose sauces and fillings clearly and eat hot before the rice sheet firms as it cools.

Flaky pastry surrounds a sweet filling made with edible rose petals, creating a fragrant bakery snack strongly associated with Kunming's flower-growing economy.

Most people pass through Kunming on the way somewhere else, which keeps it relaxed. The centre around Green Lake is the part to know: the old university quarter, Wenlin Street's cafés, the Yuantong Temple under its cliff, and the lake itself, which fills with red-billed gulls from Siberia every winter.
The altitude keeps summers cool and winters bright. Yunnan's wild mushroom season runs from June to September and the city's restaurants build their menus around it. Flowers are the other trade: the Dounan market south of the city ships most of the cut flowers in Asia.
The Stone Forest is the standard day trip. The Western Hills, with the Dragon Gate carved into the cliff above Dianchi Lake, are closer and quieter.
Getting there+
**Changshui (KMG)** is 25 kilometres north-east, with flights from every big city and most of South-East Asia; metro line 6 and a change reaches the centre in about an hour. High-speed trains to Dali take about two hours and Lijiang about three, from **Kunming** station in the city or **Kunming South** , far to the south on metro line 1. Guiyang is two and a half hours, Guangzhou about seven.
