Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill is a low but culturally dense hill associated with Suzhou's early history. The leaning Yunyan Pagoda, Sword Pool, rock inscriptions, temple remains and garden spaces layer legend, archaeology and later commemoration. The ascent is modest, yet the site rewards attention to how successive periods reused the same landform.

Lingering Garden
Lingering Garden is a World Heritage classical garden celebrated for the choreography of architecture, rock and changing scale. A narrow entrance sequence opens into courtyards and water, while latticed windows, covered corridors and the Cloud-Capped Peak stone build layered views. It is more compact than the Humble Administrator's Garden but often feels spatially more intricate.

Suzhou-style Soup Noodles
苏式汤面
Fine noodles sit in a carefully prepared clear or dark broth and are ordered with separate toppings such as braised pork, smoked fish or seasonal ingredients. Broth, noodle firmness and topping are distinct choices.
Traditionally eaten in the morning; specify red or white broth and ask about pork-based stock if relevant.
Juicy, savory, slightly sweet and crisp-bottomed
Suzhou Pan-fried Buns
苏州生煎
Yeasted buns with pork and hot juices are steamed and fried in a covered pan, producing a soft upper crust and crisp base. Suzhou versions are often subtly sweet and less aggressively fried than some Shanghai styles.
Let it cool and open carefully because the filling can release scalding liquid.

Crab-shell Pastry
蟹壳黄
A small laminated, sesame-topped pastry is baked to a crab-shell colour and filled with sweet or savory mixtures; the name describes its appearance, not necessarily crab meat.
Ask which filling is inside and eat warm before the laminated crust softens.
Floral, gently sweet, sticky and crisp
Osmanthus Glutinous Rice Lotus Root
桂花糖藕
Lotus root is stuffed with glutinous rice, slowly cooked and sliced, then glazed with a fragrant osmanthus syrup for a classic Jiangnan cold sweet.
Usually served cool in slices; sweetness and texture vary with cooking time.

Suzhou's classical gardens are UNESCO-listed and deservedly so, but visiting five in a day is a mistake. Pick two, arrive when they open, and give each an hour. The rest of the time, walk the canals of Pingjiang Road and the quieter lanes west of it.
The old town is a rectangle of canals and low buildings; the new town, with the tall Gate to the East, is a metro ride away. Stay old.
Suzhou is also the silk city. The museum is good and the shops on the tourist streets are not.
Getting there+
No airport of its own; Shanghai Hongqiao is 25 minutes away by high-speed train to **Suzhou** station on the north edge of the old town, or **Suzhou North** for some services. Hangzhou is about 1.5 hours.

Stay a night in the old town instead of day-tripping from Shanghai
The train from Hongqiao takes 25 minutes, which is why most people come at ten and leave at six — exactly the hours the old town is busiest. A night in a guesthouse near Pingjiang Road buys you two quiet halves of the day: the canals at dusk with the lanterns on, and the gardens at opening before the first coach. Suzhou station sits on the north edge of the old town, so you can walk in with your bag.
