Datong City Wall
Datong's present wall recreates the Ming defensive circuit around a historic urban grid, incorporating archaeological and documented evidence but extensive modern reconstruction. From the top, axes link gates, temples, drum tower and new development, making the city plan legible. Its value is strongest when visitors distinguish surviving historical layers and archaeological remains from the twenty-first-century rebuilding project.

Enter through whichever gate is officially open; entrances and one-way routes can vary. The circuit is long, so decide whether to walk one section or use an authorised bicycle service.
Practical notes
Wind exposure is strong and shade limited. Avoid storms and icy conditions, keep away from battlement edges and confirm the exit location before committing to a long circuit.
