Nanjing City Wall and Zhonghua Gate
Nanjing's Ming wall follows hills, rivers and former palace boundaries rather than a simple rectangle, making it one of the most ambitious surviving brick defensive systems. Zhonghua Gate contains layered gate courts and troop-storage spaces, while other open sections reveal different relationships with lakes and neighbourhoods. Visit one section deeply instead of assuming the wall is a continuous public walkway.

Metro and buses serve Zhonghua Gate and several independent wall gates. Confirm the exact entrance and exit because open sections do not always connect.
Practical notes
Exposed wall tops become very hot, windy or slippery. Carry water, avoid lightning, protect historic bricks and check last entry for the chosen section rather than relying on a citywide schedule.
