色拉寺
Sera Monastery
Founded in the early fifteenth century, Sera remains a major Gelug monastic institution rather than a reconstructed historic attraction. Assembly halls, colleges, courtyards and hillside setting reveal how study, ritual and communal routines shape a monastery. Publicly visible debate sessions may occur under current schedules, but they are part of religious education, not a guaranteed show staged for cameras.

Use a city bus or licensed taxi to the official entrance, then walk on uneven and sometimes steep paths. Do not continue onto unsigned hillsides or closed monastic areas.
Practical notes
Confirm opening notices, keep silent near ceremonies and never crowd or direct monks for photographs. Follow hall-specific rules, move at an acclimatisation pace and leave before fatigue or afternoon weather makes the return difficult.
