岳麓书院
Yuelu Academy
Founded in 976, Yuelu Academy sustained traditions of Confucian scholarship through successive dynasties and evolved into the educational lineage of Hunan University. Gates, lecture halls, shrines, inscriptions and gardens express how study, ritual and landscape were joined. Its continuing academic setting distinguishes it from a frozen historical reconstruction and asks visitors to respect an active university campus.

Getting there
Metro Line 4 to Hunan University plus a short walk is simplest. Approach through the designated academy entrance rather than wandering into restricted teaching areas.
Practical notes
Reserve if required, read the inscriptions and allow quiet time beyond the central hall. The academy and mountain use different schedules; steep hillside routes are optional additions.
