Harbin
Harbin grew up around a Russian railway and still looks it: onion domes, cobbled Central Street, sausage and black bread. In winter the river freezes and the city builds a town out of ice. Summer is green and mild and nobody comes, which is its own argument.

Saint Sophia Church and Architectural Art Museum
Saint Sophia's large green dome and red-brick mass record the Orthodox communities that emerged with Harbin's railway-era growth. After conservation, the former church became an architectural art museum rather than an active parish. Its interior photographs and city-building material help place the monument within a wider landscape of railway offices, synagogues, commercial blocks and homes created by Chinese and migrant communities.

Sun Island Scenic Area
Sun Island is a broad river-island landscape of wetlands, woodland, gardens and cultural facilities on the north bank of the Songhua River. It offers a green summer counterpoint to central Harbin and hosts major snow-sculpture activity in winter, but those seasonal products are not interchangeable with the year-round park. Its scale explains the river's role in the city's ecology, recreation and north-bank development.

Harbin Ice and Snow World
Harbin Ice and Snow World is a seasonal, newly designed landscape of illuminated ice architecture, large snow forms, performances and winter activities. It is rebuilt for each edition rather than preserved as a permanent monument, so images from one year do not guarantee the next layout. The project shows how cold climate, ice-harvesting skills, lighting and mass public entertainment combine in a temporary city-scale artwork.

Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime Committed by Unit 731
This memorial museum and surviving site complex documents Unit 731's biological-warfare programme, human experimentation and wartime crimes through archival evidence, artefacts, archaeology and preserved structures. It is a place of victims' memory and historical accountability, not an entertainment attraction. The exhibitions can be emotionally distressing, and a responsible visit requires time, quiet attention and respect for the people represented.

Thin pork slices are starch-coated, fried for a brittle shell and quickly tossed in a bright sweet-sour sauce with ginger, scallion and carrot.
Best shared immediately before steam softens the crust. Confirm pork and frying-oil concerns before ordering.
Smoky, garlicky, salty and meaty

A smoked, garlicky sausage developed through Harbin's cross-border food traditions, with a firm casing and coarse pork filling suited to slicing as a cold snack.
Check the production date and cold-storage guidance. It contains pork and can be high in sodium; branded versions differ in texture.
Toasty, mildly sour and wheaty
Harbin Dalieba Bread
大列巴
A large Russian-influenced round loaf with a dark, firm crust and dense wheat crumb, sometimes flavoured with malt, raisins or nuts.
Ask whether nuts, dairy or dried fruit are included. A whole loaf is large; buy sliced or share it, and keep it sealed against Harbin's dry air.
Icy, juicy, sweet and lightly tangy
Frozen Pear
冻梨
Pears are repeatedly frozen until their skins darken and the flesh becomes soft, cold and intensely juicy after partial thawing, a classic northeastern winter treatment.
Thaw in clean water until soft enough to bite, then pierce or peel carefully because juice releases quickly. Avoid if extreme cold aggravates dental sensitivity.

INNER MONGOLIAHarbin
The Chinese Eastern Railway reached the Songhua River in 1898 and Harbin was laid out by Russians, then filled by Jews, Poles and White émigrés fleeing the revolution. The old districts of Daoli and Nangang keep the buildings; the Daowai quarter across the tracks has the Chinese answer to them, a grid of courtyard houses with baroque façades.
Winter is the reason most people come. From late December to February it is twenty below, the river is a road, and the Ice and Snow World lights up a whole town of carved ice after dark. Bring proper boots, layers, and hand warmers for your phone.
Summer Harbin is a different city: river beaches, beer gardens on Central Street, and long light evenings at 45 degrees north.
Getting there+
High-speed trains from Beijing take about five hours to **Harbin West** , on metro line 3; from Shenyang two hours, from Changchun one. **Harbin** station in the centre also takes fast trains and is walkable to Central Street. **Taiping (HRB)** airport is 35 kilometres south-west; the airport bus takes about an hour and taxis are metered.
