稻城
Daocheng
Daocheng is a high-altitude county of glacial valleys, sacred peaks, pastoral land, Tibetan villages and important Palaeolithic research. Yading is its best-known protected landscape, but a responsible visit begins with acclimatisation and respect for living communities rather than racing directly to the highest lakes. Build spare days into the route because weather, health and ecological controls can override plans.

Yading Nature Reserve
Yading Nature Reserve is a major landscape whose scale, setting and local conditions reward advance planning rather than a rushed stop.

Yading Short Route: Chonggu and Pearl Lake
The shorter Yading route links the Chonggu area with forest paths and Pearl Lake below the sacred peak Chenrezig. It offers a substantial high-altitude landscape without requiring the longest upper-valley hike, and is often the more responsible choice during early acclimatisation. Chonggu is part of a living Tibetan Buddhist cultural landscape, while boardwalks and lake-edge barriers protect fragile vegetation and water.
洛绒牛场
Luorong Pasture
Luorong Pasture opens beneath the three sacred peaks as a broad high valley of meadow, watercourses and seasonal grazing landscape. It is both a destination and the decision point for much harder trails above. Boardwalk access makes the setting appear easy, but altitude remains severe and weather can close views within minutes. The pastoral scene represents working and sacred land, not an empty stage for unrestricted wandering.

Milk Lake and Five-color Lake High Route
The route to Milk Lake and Five-color Lake reaches a very high glacial basin above Luorong Pasture. Thin air, exposed slopes, rapidly changing weather and long return logistics make it a serious mountain undertaking despite its popularity online. Lake colour varies with light, ice and weather, and access may close for conservation or safety. Completing the route is never more important than health, ecological limits or a safe return.
亚丁村
Yading Village Cultural Landscape
Yading Village is a living Tibetan settlement within the protected landscape, shaped by farming, pastoral practice, religious life and the rapid growth of tourism. Conservation work seeks to retain village form, fields and old trees while improving services. Visitors should not treat homes, residents or daily rituals as decorative scenery; the meaningful experience is understanding how a community negotiates heritage, ecology and visitor pressure.
稻城海子山
Haizi Mountain Plateau
Haizi Mountain is an expansive high plateau of glacially shaped rock, shallow lakes and sparse vegetation. Its scale and apparent emptiness reveal a harsh alpine environment rather than unused land, and roadside viewpoints are safer than improvised wandering across wetlands or boulder fields. The landscape is highly exposed, with limited shelter and a lower margin for mechanical, medical or weather problems.

Salty, buttery and deeply tea-scented
Daocheng Butter Tea
稻城酥油茶
Strong tea is churned with butter and salt into a warming, calorie-rich drink suited to cold highland conditions and hospitality rituals.
Sip slowly and accept refills according to the host's cues. It contains dairy, can be salty, and should not be treated as prevention or treatment for altitude illness.
Toasty, nutty and softly savoury
Roasted Barley Tsampa
稻城糌粑
Roasted highland-barley flour is mixed with butter tea or milk and kneaded by hand into small portions, creating a compact staple for highland life.
Follow a host's demonstration and mix small amounts to avoid waste. Barley contains gluten and butter-tea versions contain dairy and salt.
Thick, creamy and distinctly sour
Yak-milk Yogurt
牦牛酸奶
Rich yak milk is cultured into a thick, sharply tangy yogurt, sometimes served with sugar to balance its acidity.
Choose properly refrigerated yogurt and ask whether the milk was pasteurised. It contains dairy; add sugar gradually and do not rely on room-temperature roadside products.
Toasty, mildly sweet and chewy
Highland-barley Cake
青稞饼
Highland-barley flour is blended with wheat or other flour, shaped into flat rounds and pan-cooked or baked for a portable grain snack.
Eat warm and carry only enough for the day. It usually contains gluten and may contain dairy; dry cakes require water at altitude.
